Oral Rest Posture and Myofunctional Therapy

The Posture Nobody Checks

What Is Oral Rest Posture?

Oral rest posture is where the tongue, lips and jaw sit when you aren't talking or eating. Healthy posture means lips closed without strain, teeth slightly apart and the whole tongue resting gently on the roof of the mouth. You hold this position most of the day and all night, so it shapes far more than your mouth.

A Full-Body Connection

How Tongue Position Affects Your Body

When the tongue rests low, the jaw tends to drop and the head shifts forward to keep the airway open. That chain reaction travels down through the neck, shoulders and upper back. Myofunctional therapy strengthens the muscles that keep the tongue up and the lips sealed, then trains that position until the body defaults to it.

Parted Lips

A mouth that hangs open while concentrating or watching TV is one of the most common signs.

Low Tongue

A tongue resting on the floor of the mouth or against the lower teeth needs retraining.

Jaw Tension

Clenching and grinding often come from a jaw that's working to compensate for poor posture.

Neck and Shoulder Tightness

Muscle tension that keeps coming back can trace up the chain to the mouth.

Rounded Shoulders

A slouch that's hard to correct may be the body adjusting to keep the airway clear.

Tongue Restrictions

A tongue tie can make correct resting posture physically impossible until it's addressed.

Lasting Results

Working Alongside Your Care Team

Many clients see a chiropractor, physical therapist or bodyworker at the same time, and correcting oral posture often helps their results hold. Brandee brings eighteen years of dental hygiene experience to every evaluation. She also knows firsthand, through her own family, how much changes once oral posture is corrected.
